Pete Rose, also known as Charlie Hustle, was never my favorite player growing up but there’s no denying his impact on baseball. With over 3000 hits, Rose played the game like it was a street fight — sliding, sprinting, and challenging every play. I was more of a Giants or Pirates fan, but you couldn’t ignore the way Pete attacked the game. Pete Rose, the legendary Charlie Hustle, played the game like no one else. From his first at-bat to his 3000th hit, Pete Rose redefined effort, intensity, and production.
I was not a Pete Rose fan or a non-fan. I did like the Reds, but I was not a “Fan”. I was a Giant then Pirate fan. My like of the Reds was more for Joe Morgan and Johhny Bench. As controversial as he may be, Pete Rose was the ultimate competitor. The record books—and baseball fans—can’t ignore what Pete Rose achieved.
Morgan because he was a small 2nd Baseman like I was. Johnny Bench was probably the first superstar from for my generation. So, he was the young player the young people liked. He was not from our father’s generation. Also the front 3 of their lineup was exciting because of the way they ran and stole bases.
How Pete Rose Got the Nickname Charlie Hustle
How he played the game!. Pete was always attacking the game. This starts with the great story of how he got the nickname Charlie Hustle. He drew a walk in a Spring Training game. Pete being Pete sprinted to first. Which he would do his whole career. When they saw it Mickey Mantle and Whitey Ford said “Who is that Charlie Hustle”.
Sounds like something Mickey and Whitey would say. But I am pretty sure they both respected the way he plated. Whitey was a pitcher that the bigger the game the better he pitched. And Mickey in his later years came to the stadium early so could have his legs wrapped so he could plain in pain every night
Pete of course, carried the nickname as a badge of honor and it fit. Pete ALWAYSED Hustled. How did he play the game> He attacked it. From his crouching batting stance he attacked the pitch. He attack running the bases. He attacked sliding. He attacked anything tjat would help a victory. He attacked Bud Harrelson in a playoff game.
He even gave a fake attack when he got hit on the foot. In a World Series game for the Phillies he got innocently hit by the pitch in the foot. Pete attacked like he was nad that they hit him on purpose. The whole point, I believe was to get his team going. The Phillies won their first World Series that year.
Charlie Hustle: Pete Rose Attacking the Game and Earning 3000 Hits
With Pete is was not just how he played the game. He also accomplished a lot during his career. Starting with the rookie of the year award. As a rookie Pete hit .273 had 170 hits and scored 17 runs. All solid numbers. He also had 25 doubles a thing at which he would become proficient .
During his spectacular career Pete accomplished many great things. He was a lifetime .300 Hitter. Finishing with a lifetime average of.303. He had over 200 hits 10 yeras. He led the league in Hits 7 times. He also had 3 Batting Titles. That is production. Pete also led the league in runs scored 4 years. Production, which was his greatest thing.
Now to what he was best at. Pete led the, league in doubles 5 times ans as of right now is second on the all time doubles list. With only Tv Cobb having more doubles than Pete Rose. Doubles are production. He also holds the record for most singles in a career. Production! Pete also had acreer of 133 triles, which is an awful lot.
And Pete would hit about 10 Home runs a year. hat is not the bad for the type of hitter he was. Knowing hitting I bet it was because if you got something he could pull he yanked a double down the line. And every once in a while he got it airborne and it went out. Typical for a doubles hitter.
The Relentless Style of Pete Rose
Pete did not steal a lot of bases, around 10 a year. He was still a great baserunner. People that know baseball know the best mark of a great baserunner is first to third. Or first to home on a double. And these skills are not all about speed.
They come from getting a quick read on whether a flyout or a single or double. It is also about how you run the bags and keep from rounding out to far from the basepaths. And Pete Rose never seemed to slow up the speedsters behind him. Bobby Tolan and Joe Morgan. Or later Ken Griffey Sr. and Joe Morgan.
And he helped his teams to win. He was in 6 World Series and was a three time winner. Being leadoff and scoring runs made him very important on these teams. As a player Charlie Hustle was simply a producer and a winner. Even though I was not a great fan I still consider him one of the iconic players during my childhood. He played even into my early adulthood. He was a great player and unique. Noone played any harder than Pete. Few players symbolized attacking the game more than Pete Rose. Every sprint, slide, and swing showed his drive to win.
Charlie Hustle started in 5 different positions in the All- Satr game and he is a member of the 3000 hit club. This is one of the great accomplishments in baseball.
Other Aspects of a Career
While many players dream of reaching 3000 hits, Pete Rose not only passed that mark but set the all-time record with 4,256 hits. That record still stands today and may never be broken.
Now the other things on Pete Rose. I am not into sports for much of the drama side. I like to think along with Managers decisions, pitch calling and those aspects of the game I do not get into off the filed things. But with Pete it is impossible to ignore them completely. He was obviously wrong with the gambling. I know it is in every clubhouse. Signs that remind gambling is not allowed for participants.
It is like this for me. That unless you can prove he through games. I do believe that Pete should be in the Hall of Fame. And maybe even no reference to his coaching career. For me it is like this. I was with a friend who was watching Stephen A. Smitha and his partner long running talk show. I respect them and evev Mr. Smith’s political opinions. He doses his research, but I remembered I just not into such a feisty way to talk about sports. We get enough headaches in life.
But like I said Pete Rose, in my opinion should be in the Hall. But that aside my main reason for thi page is he was generational player from my childhood. RIP Charlie Hustle you entertained us all. Cannot taje tat away from him. RIP Pete.
